How to Stay Connected in Kenya as a Traveller

14 July 2026 · 4 min read

Kenya has some of the best mobile infrastructure on the African continent. 4G LTE coverage reaches most major cities and tourist areas, making it an ideal destination for eSIM travellers.

Coverage across Kenya

Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, and Nakuru have excellent 4G coverage. The Maasai Mara and coastal regions have good coverage in main towns, with more variable signal in remote bush areas.

Recommended plans for Kenya

For a week-long safari or beach holiday, a 1GB or 3GB plan covers maps, social media, and messaging comfortably. If you're working remotely or doing video calls, step up to 5GB or 10GB.

Getting around Nairobi

Uber and Bolt work well in Nairobi — you'll need data to use them. Make sure your eSIM is active before you land at JKIA to order a ride immediately on arrival.

Money and safety

M-Pesa is Kenya's mobile money system used everywhere. Your eSIM handles data, but keep your Kenyan SIM (or roaming on your home SIM) for M-Pesa transactions if needed.
